OpenAI is reportedly shifting its focus toward audio-first artificial intelligence as it prepares to enter the consumer hardware space with a new voice-centric device. Unlike traditional gadgets that rely heavily on screens, the upcoming product is said to prioritise natural voice interaction, signalling a major strategic move toward AI-native, screenless computing.
According to a report by The Information, OpenAI has recently reorganised its engineering, product, and research teams to accelerate development in audio AI. The restructuring is aimed at closing the gap between OpenAI’s advanced text-based systems and its comparatively less mature voice models.
People familiar with the matter told The Information that this renewed emphasis on audio technology is directly linked to OpenAI’s upcoming consumer device, which has been described as “largely audio-based.” The device is expected to launch within the next year, with industry insiders pointing to a possible release window in late 2026 or early 2027.
Rather than functioning as a conventional gadget, the hardware is believed to be designed as an AI companion. Early indications suggest OpenAI could explore screenless smart speakers or wearable form factors that remain ambient and always accessible, rather than demanding constant user attention.
A key pillar of this strategy is the rollout of a new, more advanced audio AI model planned for early 2026, possibly by the end of the first quarter. The report claims the upcoming model will deliver more natural-sounding speech, improved handling of interruptions, and the ability to speak simultaneously with users. OpenAI’s push into hardware gained momentum following its acquisition of io Products in May 2025. The startup, founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, was reportedly acquired for around $6.5 billion. Ive and his team are now closely involved in shaping OpenAI’s design direction, with a clear emphasis on reducing reliance on screens and creating calmer, more intuitive computing experiences.
Industry observers believe an audio-first device closely aligns with Ive’s long-standing vision of ambient technology—products that integrate seamlessly into daily life without becoming addictive or intrusive. This approach also echoes CEO Sam Altman’s criticism of simply “bolting AI onto existing products,” instead favouring hardware built specifically for AI from the ground up.
